The old laboratory (building no. 31) has been renewed. Roof and facades are removed and the concrete and steel structure is re-used. This showcase project shows how photo-voltaic solar panels for sustainable energy generation can be built into the façade and roof of the existing office and laboratory building at the ECN Energy Research Centre in Petten, the Netherlands.

The original building was a classic example of poor insulation with lots of cold bridges. The south front of the building has been renovated and provided with an ingenious system to cut down sunlight, with movable louvers powered by 300 m2 of solar panels. An additional 300 m2 of solar panels have been built into the roof. The façade itself remains readilyaccessible, since the self-supporting structure bearing the new elements is situated 0.80 m in front of it.
The renovation has led to a 75% reduction in the building’s energy consumption.
