The Modern Group Beijing initiated the renovation of their old building/headquarters with an expansion/addition of an Innovation Centre. In order to apply state-of-the-art concepts, the choice was made to build a sustainable and energy neutral building. In the final design, there is a synergy between the architectural concept and the ecological concept.

The building is located between existing buildings and a new apartment complex. The adjacent green area, consisting of five hills, led To the inspiration of the design. The Innovation Centre follows along the dynamic landscape and ends with a large, spatial ‘wave’ that rises out of the water. The water divides the building and the environment and places emphasises upon the building’s presence. This mirroring effect in the water binds the whole together.
The ecological goal is to create a zero-energy building with a comfortable and healthy interior climate. The building exhibits the most recent technologies and can be adapted in the future with newer technologies. Water is an important theme in Beijing due to its scarcity. Water is collected, filtered and reused, thereby reducing reference use by 80%. The water filtration system has a high enough purification ability, which makes the water safe to use as drinking water.

The project was done in co-operations with DHV China and Five Spices The Hague (NL)
